GMJ was founded in 1990. With a background in architecture, we adopted the first off the shelf PC based animation and rendering software to create award winning 3D sequences for television and corporate films, before focusing on architectural visualisation. At that time, all visualisations were hand drawn or painted. This approach introduced a new level of light and realism that became a defining characteristic of our work.

GMJ produced the first realistic daytime digital images of architectural projects and property developments in 1994, accurately superimposing digital models into high resolution photography. Until then, representations in the architectural and commercial property sectors had been limited to night or evening views. This work was carried out for London Transport Property during the very early stages of the Crossrail project.

GMJ developed the process for creating verified planning images in 1994. The 25 Ropemaker Place application marked the first use of accurate, verifiable representations of a proposed development. By combining survey data, photography and 3D models, we produce reliable visualisations of new proposals. Today, Accurate Visual Representations (AVRs), are a standard requirement for Townscape and Visual Impact Assessments.

For CityPoint, GMJ created the first fully immersive flythrough and theatre experience in property marketing. Alongside this, we produced a marketing film using green screen technology to integrate real people into walkthrough sequences. The immersive theatre was later presented at MIPIM 1997, where it attracted and thrilled large audiences.

In 1996, GMJ created Archinet, the first internet platform for architects at a time when the web was largely unknown within the profession. GMJ also created some of the first websites for architectural practices and property companies, establishing an early digital presence for leading organisations including Foster and Partners, Terry Farrell and Partners, Alsop and Stormer, Building Design Partnership and the Architectural Association.

In 1996, GMJ adopted Lightscape, specialist lighting software, to enhance the quality of its visualisations, particularly for interiors. Adapted for rendering, it integrated radiosity and ray tracing for physically based lighting, enabling accurate simulation of light fittings and their interaction with daylight, and creating a more realistic balance of light and shadow.

GMJ created an immersive film and theatre for CityPoint using technology developed for flight and marine simulation, producing a super wide flythrough of the proposed development. Working with Silicon Graphics and specialist partners, we delivered a high performance playback system and theatre environment. The theatre was shipped and rebuilt in Cannes for MIPIM 1997, where long queues formed throughout the day to experience the film.

Working closely with architects KPF, GMJ produced the first high quality QuickTime VR 360 images for use in the property and planning context, giving an accurate impression of approaching and entering the proposed Heron Tower development. These were commissioned and used to great effect as part of a groundbreaking planning inquiry, widely seen as marking the beginning of tall building development in the City.

GMJ were commissioned by Foster and Partners to create a panoramic immersive film capturing the atmosphere of Hong Kong's international airport, Chek Lap Kok, the largest construction project ever undertaken. The film was a highlight of ‘The Norman Foster Studio - Exploring the City’ at UEA, The British Museum and other locations worldwide.

GMJ produced PR films and images to support the launch of the new Wembley Stadium, a sensitive project given the demolition of the original stadium. This included a construction film documenting the demolition of the old stadium and its replacement. We also created marketing imagery and films for club and premium seating, using green screen techniques to show people experiencing the new stadium, along with an interactive seat finder tool providing views from seats and boxes.

Launched in 2004, the GMJ London CityModel, the first highly accurate 3D urban model of a global city, combining detailed survey data with aerial photography. Covering 40 square kilometres of central London, it was developed as an objective tool to assess the impact of proposed developments. First created for the London Borough of Southwark to help democratise the planning process, it attracted interest from the GLA, central government and security services.

GMJ produced a series of evocative illustrations and a full 3D model of Pancras Square for planning, integrating the scheme into the London CityModel.
The £2bn King’s Cross regeneration is one of the UK’s largest and most prestigious developments, comprising 8 million square feet of mixed use space, 20 historic buildings and contributions from leading architects including John McAslan, Allies and Morrison, David Chipperfield, Eric Parry, Caruso St John, Porphyrios Associates and Wilkinson Eyre.

Building on our experience with immersive panoramic films for CityPoint and Foster and Partners, GMJ developed a new immersive presentation using three large split screens for the Rolls Building on Fetter Lane, designed by Woods Bagot, in 2005. The film formed part of a wider set of marketing images produced by GMJ.

GMJ was invited to present alongside Autodesk at SIGGRAPH 2006 in Boston. Following this, we were invited to deliver a keynote presentation at Autodesk University in Las Vegas to an audience of over 7,500, with a further 1,500 watching via live stream. GMJ presented the London CityModel, our 3D planning tools and related work. Later that year, Autodesk invited us to present again at a conference in Tokyo.

For One Hyde Park, the ultra high end residential development between Knightsbridge and Hyde Park, designed by RSHP for the Candy brothers, GMJ created a marketing film and animated model presentation in which a 3D model appeared to float in front of a back projected film. To achieve this effect, GMJ adapted the theatrical technique known as Pepper’s Ghost. The presentation was shown in a specially designed theatre as part of the marketing suite at One Hyde Park.

For Liverpool One, a major regeneration scheme involving over 30 architects, GMJ created a wide area Liverpool CityModel to provide context for the development and produced marketing images and two films: a panoramic flythrough and an interactive QTVR experience with fully rendered 360 degree views which enabled clients and agents to explore the scheme in detail, moving through streets and walkways viewing retail spaces from all angles.

In 2009, GMJ developed software to automate the creation of logical and accurate 3D CAD models from raw LiDAR scan data, in collaboration with London South Bank University through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership involving programmers and mathematicians. Our work was positively assessed by programmers at Autodesk as a novel and effective approach.

GMJ created Postcards from the Future, a series of visualisations exploring the potential impact of climate change on London. The project communicates environmental risks in a clear and engaging way, reaching over 700,000 visitors through exhibitions at the Museum of London and related events, and gaining worldwide attention through print and online media, including the Sunday Times Magazine and The Sun.

GMJ produced a series of images to support the bid and launch of the London 2012 Olympic Games, communicating the vision for the transformation of East London. The work formed part of a wider PR strategy, presenting the scale and ambition of the project in a clear and engaging way.

For the City of London, GMJ created the first 3D maximum build envelope for a city centre by defining and projecting complex planning constraints, including protected views and local controls, into a single model. Working with City planners, this was refined into a clear development envelope, now used to guide scale and assess new building proposals within the cluster.

GMJ produced planning images for the first major architectural project and extension at Westminster Abbey, designed by Ptolemy Dean, Surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey, for a new tower providing public access to the Abbey’s galleries. In 2019, GMJ was appointed to produce planning images for the proposed Sacristy and new public building at the Abbey.

Launched in 2016, Lever Gallery researched and curated leading illustration work created in London from the 1950s onwards. Celebrating the art of illustration, it showcased some of the finest hand drawn work produced in London, particularly during the boom years of the 1960s, when London briefly eclipsed New York as the creative capital of illustration.

Alongside a detailed film explaining the planning constraints affecting the City of London, GMJ regularly updates its future views of the City by incorporating the latest schemes to achieve planning permission. More recently, GMJ transformed this into a first timeline film showing all major new schemes in the order they were built and, more recently, granted planning.
